A European Software Strategy

The NESSI steering committee released it’s Position Paper on European Software Strategy. I share an authoring credit, with 14 others, it is the work of a committee. This document reviews the competitiveness of the European Software Industry and makes recommendations for R&D efficiency, SME growth, Open Source use, increased standardisation, investment in regional excellence and strengthening European academia’s software engineering capability.

Sailing in the Ionian

I went on a flotilla sailing holiday in the Ionian Sea, and recorded some of what happened on my sun/oracle blog. This version of the article which is an aggregation of the originals was posted on this blog in July 2016.This holiday had been a long time ambition of mine in order to see Ithaca, the legendary home of Odysseus from the sea. Actually I wanted to land there and explore, but for various reasons, this didn’t happen, and at least I have an excuse to return.

Laptop diaries XII, Python

I wrote my first Python program over the weekend. The program determines if the file system is in jeopardy of bursting and sends a text. I have copied this in full to this blog as while the implementation technology is defunct, the problem remains real, although IFTTT are doing a good job of solving it. How to perform a mail to text is not documented here. It’s mainly about using associative arrays and dictionaries
